Grounding, Justification, Adaptation: Towards Machines That Mean What They Say

چکیده

Meaningful language use rests on the grounding of the language in the nonlinguistic world and in the practices of language users. This grounding is built up and maintained in interaction, through Conversational Grounding, which is the interactive process with which interlocutors build mutual understanding; Justification, the ability to explain and provide reasons for one’s language use; and Adaptation, the ability to accept corrections and adapt future language use accordingly. We outline a model of grounded semantics that combines perceptual knowledge (how to visually identify potential referents of terms; realised as classifiers taking visual information as input) and taxonomic knowledge (covering lexical relations such as hyponymy and hypernymy), and we sketch a proof-of-concept implementation of a dialogue system that realises the interactional skills that ground this knowledge.

Epistemic Just fiction

According to an ancient and honorable tradition, knowledge isjustified true belief. But what is this "justification?" Theologians of the Protestant Reformation (however things may stand with their contemporary epigoni) had a clear conception of justification; justification, they held, is by faith. Contemporary epistemologists, sadly enough, do not thus speak with a single voice. They don't ofte...

You Say Periklute, I Say Paraclete: Towards a Reconciliation Between the Bible and the Quran

The Quranic statement that Jesus predicted Muhammad by name is examined in light of the expectation of what the “kingdom of God” was. The concept of the kingdom of God as being the light or fire of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost is contrasted with the Sufi concept of the “Light of Muhammad.” Pentecost could be the Light of Muhammad coming upon the apostles of Christ; the Light is the same, but kn...

Developing a new justification for assent.

BACKGROUND Current guidelines do not clearly outline when assent should be attained from paediatric research participants, nor do they detail the necessary elements of the assent process. This stems from the fact that the fundamental justification behind the concept of assent is misunderstood. In this paper, we critically assess three widespread ethical arguments used for assent: children's rig...

A Brief Philosophical Encounter with Science and Medicine

We show a lot of respect for science today. To back up our claims, we tend to appeal to scientific methods. It seems that we all agree that these methods are effective for gaining the truth. We can ask why science has its special status as a supplier of knowledge about our external world and our bodies. Of course, one should not always trust what scientists say. Nonetheless, epistemological jus...

Societal Grounding Is Essential to Meaningful Language Use

Language engineers often point to tight connections between their systems’ linguistic representations and accumulated sensor data as a sign that their systems really mean what they say. While we believe such connections are an important piece in the puzzle of meaning, we argue that perceptual grounding alone does not suffice to explain the specific, stable meanings human speakers attribute to e...
